When I read this book, I found more solid information in it than I expected. Although it was published in 1917, I was still amazed that it has the info on different aspects of birds that I did not know such as Migration, Lighthouses causing deaths to birds (I had no idea of this), Birds in Winter, Birds of the Night and so much more.

**For me, my favorite part of this book was about where Chickadees spend the night and I found this to be true as I have Chickadees that come into my backyard and I feed them song bird seed daily. Turns out that the Chickadees in my front yard creep into small holes to spend the night. I have seem them going into my large and thick bamboo area (where there are many small holes by the bamboo).

It is so interesting to me that a book that was first published in 1917 is still so impressive today!
*This book was written in a very original style, he writes while he is observing the birds, in fact I feel like I was in the woods next to the author! The author is THERE describing his actual experiences with the birds and even writes about the twigs, the nest and so much more.

I give this a 4.5 stars because it has good information and it is a helpful addition to my current books on birds. I took off a little of the stars because it did not have any illustrations and was generous with the other stars because I learned new things that I did not know about birds especially one of my favorite birds, the Chickadee.

Was not very impressed with the book, period. Perhaps I expected too much. To waste time telling the reader that the size of the state would regulate the number of different species to my way of thinking is as though the author was addressing kindergarteners.
good
Very enjoyable for a 100 year old book. The information and enthusiasm for birding was timeless.
Boring
I could not find the bird I was looking for that was around my house I wish I could find a picture and hear the sound to.
but it was ok. you will like it.
This is well written and by someone close to the subject.
The book apparently was supposed to have some pictures or drawings but they are not in the downloaded book? The content lists them and links to the location but there is nothing but the captions.

On the brighter side, the text in this book is pretty decent and good reading, although it is way out of date (early 20th century I believe), but many of the author's views on bird conservation, ecology, and such lik, is still valid and worth reading today. His style is enjoyable and thought provoking. Bottom line, for a free-be its worth downloading and reading.

3 stars because pictures are lacking.
